What is School Counseling?
School Counselors are trained professionals who are credentialed by the state (similar to teachers) in the area of school counseling.
School counseling is meant to encourage students' academic, social, emotional, and personal development through providing a variety of services on a school campus.
Through classroom guidance, small groups, individual services, and daily interactions on campus, school counseling aims to help students get to know themselves better, understand and manage emotions, find strategies to be successful academically, and to have a toolbox full of tools and solutions for managing daily challenges and problems that may arise.
Jamey Helms
My name is Jamey Helms, and I am beyond thrilled to be a School Counselor at McClendon Elementary. My career in education began in 2004 as an elementary school teacher.
I hold a Bachelors in EC-4 Elementary Education from University of Central Oklahoma, a Masters degree in School Counseling from Texas Tech as well as teaching and counselor certifications. Additionally, I will obtain my LPC certification next year from Texas Tech.
I am married to Matthew Helms, and we have two children, Addisyn (Senior at Wylie East) and Keaton (7th grader at Edge MS). We have three spoiled fur babies named Thor Bentley, Loki and Chloe. I love being creative, spending quality time with family and friends being outdoors, going to concerts and sporting events. My family and I reside in Wylie.
Working with kids is my life's passion. I truly believe that student success begins with first establishing relationships and creating a safe, positive space. It is important to me that people feel they are valued and heard. I love to have fun and strive to make a difference in the lives around me by helping them believe in their fullest potential.
I love serving the families and community of Brave Nation!
